USPS Regulations for Postal Tabs

Regulations for using tabs on folded self-mailers and newsprint.

US Postal Self-Mailing Tab/Wafer seal requirements

The United States Postal Service recommends that the following standards be observed for all folded self-mailers:

Size, number of tabs and paper weight required

 

Up to 1 ounce:

  • Bi-fold self-mailers
  • Tri-fold  self-mailers
  • Quarter-fold self-mailers not made of newsprint

2 tabs, 1” diameter: “affix one tab either on the top edge within one inch of the leading and one tab within one inch of the trailing edge or affix one tab on the leading and one tab on the trailing edges within one inch of the top”

70 lb paper

Oblong-fold self mailers

2 tabs, 1” diameter: “affix two tabs in the center of the top and trailing edges or on the trailing edge within one inch of the top and bottom. Tabs may not be applied to the bottom of an oblong mailpiece”

70 lb paper

Mailings with die-cut openings or perforated panes

2 tabs, 1.5” diameter: affix tabs per above standards

100 lb paper

Mailings with loose enclosures or attachments

2 tabs, 1.5” diameter: affix tabs per above standards

80 lb paper

 

Over 1 ounce:

  • Bi-fold self-mailers
  • Tri-fold  self-mailers

2 tabs, 1.5” diameter: “affix one tab either on the top edge within one inch of the leading and one tab within one inch of the trailing edge or affix one tab on the leading and one tab on the trailing edges within one inch of the top”

80 lb paper

Quarter-fold self-mailers weighing more than 1 oz or made of newsprint

3 tabs, 1.5” diameter: “affix two tabs on the leading and trailing edges within 1 inch from the top, with one additional tab affixed on the lower leading edge ½” inch from the bottom”

80 lb paper

(55 lb newsprint)

Mailings with die-cut openings or perforated panes

Bi-fold, tri-fold & oblong: 2 tabs, 2” diameter

Quarter-fold:  3 tabs, 1.5” diameter

affix tabs per above standards

120 lb paper

Mailings with loose enclosures or attachments

Bi-fold, tri-fold & oblong: 2 tabs, 2” diameter

Quarter-fold:  3 tabs, 1.5” diameter

affix tabs per above standards

100 lb paper

 

 

The US Postal Service is changing its regulations

As of January 1st 2013, any or all of the following changes may come into effect:

  • Perforations on tabs no longer to be accepted
  • Tabs to be 1” or larger only; 15/16” tabs no longer to be accepted

Please be familiar with your mailing requirements and your consumption rate for tabs.
