Page 12: Installing Parts Inside Keydrum

Before Any Maintenance Procedure - UNPLUG THE MACHINE

There are 5 main parts associated the key drum on all Phoenix Electric Tape Dispensers:

1. Control Board

2. Key Pad

3. Measuring Wheel

4. Tape Length Sensor

5. On/Off Switch

Replacing these parts is simple and easy.

Control Board -

Remove key drum cover (5 small screws). Next, locate the 4 screws (one at each corner) that hold the key drum to the left side machine frame. Remove these screws. Disconnect the 5 wire lead from the Tape Length Sensor. This lead is plugged into the front side of the Control Board. Next, disconnect the 2 wire lead from the On/Off Switch to the Control Board. Disconnect the Main Wiring Hraness at the machine frame (large white multi-pin connector).

With these connectors removed you can turn the key drum upside down. There are 4 smalll screws that hold the Control Board to the underside of the Key Drum's top cover. Unscrew all 4 screws and you can easily remove and replace the Control Board.

Key Pad -

Remove the side cover of the Key Drum. The key pad has an information cable that connects into the Control Board at the front of the Control Board. Carefully pull of the cable where it plugs into the Control Board. Peel off the old key pad.

Slide the new key pad's information cable through the slot in the top of the key drum. Peel and stick the new Key Pad onto the Key Drum and plug the inforamtion cable into the Control Board.

Measuring Wheel -

Remove the Key Drum cover (5 Small screws). Locate the 4 screws (one at each corner) inside the key drum. These screws hold the key drum to the left side machine frame. Remove these screws and move the key drum back and out of the way. Next, loosen the 2 small screws on the bracket that holds the Tape Length Sensor and push this bracket down and out of the way.

The Measuring Wheel is secured to the Upper Feed Wheel Shaft by either a small set screw (.050) or a small slotted screw. If you can't see the screw you will have to manually rotate the Upper Feed Wheel Shaft. To do this, remove the Motor Cover on the right side of the machine. The Motor Chain has a sprocket that holds the chain to the Upper Feed Wheel Shaft. Loosen this 3/32 set screw so you can manully turn the Upper Feed Wheel Shaft until the screw on the Measuring Wheel is visible and easy to access. Loosen the Measuring Wheel screw and slide the old Measuring Wheel off the Upper Feed Wheel Shaft. NOTE: You will se a hole in the Upper Feed Wheel shaft under the Measuring Wheel. This hole is NOT important when installing a Measuring Wheel. It is there for ealier models.

Push the new Measuring Wheel onto the Upper Feed Wheel shaft and tighten the screw.  If you had to loosen the Chain Sprocket Screw make sure that is also re-tightened

IMPORTANT: You will have to move the Tape Length Sensor back up so that cut-outs in the Measuring Wheel can be read by this sensor. Before replacing all of the covers, check tape lengths to make sure thay are correct. Try 2 tape lengths, such as 6" and 18". if both are correct, all of the tape lengths will be correct. If the tape lengths are not correct, loosen the 2 screws on the Tape Length Sensor Bracket and re-position until correct tape lengths are achieved.

Tape Length Sensor

Helpful Hint: Before removing the old Tape Length Sensor observe the genral position of the sensor in relation to the Measuring Wheel. You will want to install the new Tape Length Sensor in closely the same position.

The Tape Length Sensor is mounted on an L-shaped bracket that is located in the upper right corner inside the key drum. Remove the old Tape Length Sensor by disconnecting the 5 wire lead from the sensor to the Control Board. Next, remove the 2 screws from the Tape Length Sensor Bracket to remove the old Tape Length Sensor.

To install the new Tape Length Sensor, first mount the Tape Length Sensor Bracket to the machine frame. Move the bracket so that it is approximately in the position of the old bracket. Connect the 5 wire lead from the sensor into the Control Broad. Helpful Hint: On the 5 wire lead the wire closest to the front of the machine is the black wire.

Test 2 tape lengths - for example 6" and 18". If both tape lengths are correct the Tape Length Sesnor is in the correct position to read the Measuring Wheel. If the tape lengths are not correct, loosen the 2 screws on the Tape Length Sensor Bracket and move the bracket slightly up/down until the 6" and 18" tape lengths are correct.

On/Off Switch

MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE POWER CORD FIRST

Remove the side cover of the key drum. Note that there are 4 wires going into the on/off switch. 2 wires lead in from the power cord and 2 wire lead in from the Control Board. Make sure you mark where they came from then remove all 4 wires .

Push the old On/Off Switch out and push the new On/Off Switch in and re-connect the wires.

NOTE On some early model Phoenix machines the On/Off Switch cut-out is slightly smaller and the new On/Off Switch may not push in easily. If this is the case you will have to enlarge the cut out where the On/Off Switch goes or you can remove some of the plastic from the new On/Off Switch.

To remove some of the plastic we use a razor blade and trim of the top and bottom plastic wings. We trim just enough until we can push the new On/Off Switch into the cut-out in the Key Drum.
