Phoenix E-1 Troubleshooting Guides

Page 1: General Maintenance

Phoenix Tape Machines require very little general maintenance. However, to maintain peak performance, superior tape moistening, and superior tape cutting, we recommend doing the following procedures on a regularly scheduled interval that should not exceed every 2 months. Machines in high use situations should have these procedures done on a monthly basis. If you have any service or parts related question, please feel free to call us at 1-800-899-9389- tape machine experts for over 27 years.

Before Any Maintenance Procedure - UNPLUG THE MACHINE

Clean Moistening Brushes

Remove the Water Bottle and Water Tank. The Water Tank lifts up over the small lip on the tank support shelf. If you cannot pull the tank up and over the metal lip, use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry the Water Tank up and out. Wash the Water Tank and Moistening Brushes out in warm soapy water.

Make certain that when you put the Moistening Brushes back into the Water Tank the angle of the Moistening Brushes follows the direction of the tape flow. Never reverse the Moistening Brushes. You should also never cut or trim the Moistening Brushes to remove glue deposits.

Oil Felt Oiler Pad

Located just behind the Upper Shear is the Felt Oiler Pad. Place a few drops of light machine oil (such as 3 in 1) on the flet pad. This prevents glue from building up on the shear. If glue builds up on the shear, you will see poor tape cutting. The leading edge of the tape should have a clean, straight cut. If you are experiencing poor tape cutting, please refer to Installing Shear Kit for more information on cleaning/adjusting/replacing shears.

Clean Lower Tape plate and Lower Heater Plate

Lower Tape Plate -The Lower Tape Plate is the steel plate that the tape travels over. Al Phoenix Electrics now feature a Stainless Steel Lower Tape Plate to reduce glue and dust build-up. Remove the Upper Tape Plate ( this is the removable plate that surrounds the Upper Feed Wheel). Spray the Lower Tape Plate with a detergent type cleaner. We recommend using foamy bathroom cleaner. Wipe the surface dry. Steel wool pads can also be used to remove any residual glue that remains.

Lower Heater Plate - Remove the Water Bottle and Water Tank. Lift the Top Heater up (it pivots on the retaining bar. If you see glue building up on the lower heater plate you can scrape the glue off with a single edged razor blade or use steel wool pads to remove excess build-up.

Cleaning both of these surfaces reduces tape jams.
